The Memories Were Never There

You made me laugh and it stopped my tears.  You made me laugh and it stopped my fears, but when you made me smile something inside of me began to change.

The laughter is only temporary because when the source of it goes away the after effects only last so long.  The smile that can break across my face will light up my eyes.  The smile will never be straight but, rather, it would be crooked.  To further the delight of this smile, a soft glow appears on my cheeks.

This is what you do to me.

The pain that I knew for so long has slowly begun to ebb away.  I no longer feel the need to cry.  Fears interwoven with anxieties dissipate as the smiles become more frequent and linger.

This is what you do to me.

At nightfall, I would begin to reminisce of times that are past but now these evenings are filled with more placid moments of silence and solitude.

The solitude is not one of despair for those days are disappearing into a past that will be forgotten.  As I sit here and write these lines, there is no bad feeling, no contention or even anguish.  What I am experiencing instead is a peaceful contentment after contemplating over my thoughts of the day.

This is what I do for me.

I slide behind the wheel of my car and as I do I look up one last time to the place I called home.  It is now an empty place that holds no memories.  I suppose it never did.  As a lonely tear streaks down my cheek, I turn on the car and back it out of its space.  Once I hit that highway, I know there is no turning back.  I’m looking for a new beginning, a new life.  Will someone be there to greet me when I reach the end?  I’m looking for someone strong; stronger than I.

This is what we do.
