Adam had been contemplating for too long already. "If I think about this for one more minute, my brain is going to implode." He thought to himself.
Papers strewn all over the mahogany desk, a trash can overflowing with even more crumpled papers and files in every chair of the office were starting to look like a hurricane had just happened.
Interlacing his fingers and bracing them behind his head, he began to massage with the base of his palm of his hands at the sides to ease the tension. He wasn't getting anywhere and the secretary had left for the day hours earlier. He didn't even want to look at the clock again. He had already called his wife and said not to wait for him for dinner.
Adam had been working on this case for the last six weeks and staring at the computer screen for the last 30 minutes trying to formulate the appeal he would need at 9:30 a.m. in court. Judge Sorenson was starting to lean towards the defense and it wasn't looking good at all for him.
"For the people, Adam; for the people my a--." He grumbled under his breath as he turned off the computer screen. Stretching out his legs in front of him, he leans into the back of his chair and closes his eyes as he takes a deep breath and exhales.
The ringing jars him alert and snaps his eyes open to answer. "Hello?"
"Adam, what the hell is wrong with you?"
"What?" He groggily answers. He feels so tired and doesn't understand why he's listening to the sound of his wife, Abbey, shouting at him. "Why didn't you come home last night? Who's the flimsy witch?"
"What are you talking about? It's about 7:00 p.m. and you're obviously calling the office." She must be crazy he thinks.
"NO, ADAM. I just got up to get ready for work. It's 6:30 a.m." He slowly digests that fact and turns to look at the clock on his desk. Stunned, he sees that it now says 6:32 a.m. since the phone rang.
"Damn it all to hell. I slept in my chair all night. Abbey, I'll call you later. What flimsy witch? Last I looked at the clock it said about 6:30 p.m."
"You better not be lying to me, Adam." He rolls his eyes at the phone. He doesn't have time for her to start trouble. "You got me at the office didn't you Abbey? I'll call you later. I have to rush home for another suit."
Hanging up the phone, his eyes dart around the office looking for his shoes and notices them next to the briefcase by the door. Seeing he has cold coffee, he quickly drinks that up as he grabs his keys.
Home is 20 miles away just one way. As he slips into his shoes, he quickly slams the door behind him as he heads towards the elevators.

Mr. Blue Eyes
I come into the room and take a seat. I don't know what class I am in or what I am supposed to do. I look down at the paper in front of me but don't know what it is.
I hear the voice of a teacher but it is muffled.
Once more I look at the paper and put it in a yellow manila envelope. I then hear a buzz and I know class is over. Holding the envelope to my chest, I walk out with my head hanging low and staring down.
Students are milling around in the hallway as I begin to turn around a corner. It is at this time that I realize I am on the second floor of the building. The lockers lining against the wall are not typical but, rather, odd looking. They don't have combinations or use a lock leaving me wondering how to open them.
As I turn another corner, I am still looking for my locker. "This is ridiculous." I think to myself. Not wanting to look stupid, I turn to my right to face a guy to help me and the first thing that I notice are his eyes. I am, immediately, captivated by the look in his gaze and find myself speechless.
The effect is instantaneous. The familiarity calming. The sense of safety is a natural feeling. As I look into those blue eyes that look back at me with recognition I realize then that I recognize you.
